6/12/2023 0 Comments Anthem the graphic novelThe graphic novel is an excellent adaptation of Anthem and clearly brings it to fruition. Grossman clearly understands the story she is adapting and retells the story of Equality 7-2521 and his desire for freedom in a poignant way. It does not waver from the original story of individualism, liberty, and freedom. One thing I appreciate about this adaptions is that it keeps the story intact. There is only the collective referring to himself as “we.” However, after he stumbles on a lost mine, he begins to explore his own mind and falls in love with a woman he calls the ‘Golden One.’ However, the collective he is a part of does not value his newfound desire to learn. He’s born a strong, athletic person in a post-apocalyptic world where there is no individuality. Published by the Atlas Society, the graphic novel retells this modern day fable in an illustrated way.įor those unfamiliar with the story, it follows a character named Equality 7-2521. Based on Ayn Rand’s short novel Anthem, Jennifer Grossman adapts the story with comic book artist Dan Parsons (Dark Horse Star Wars: Legacy and DC Comics Nightwing: Convergence).

Leah has returned to the land of her birth and wants to make amends for her past failures. The last book in the quartet deals with Leah, who was me favourite character from the third book. Of course having read book one, I felt the details of the series come flooding back and quickly got book four to finish the series. This book soldified that I still want to know what me blessings are. I still loved it and it actually was nice to refresh me memory on the world and characters. I realized me mistake, didn’t care, and reread book one. Now when I went to read the last book in the series, unquiet land, I of course mixed up title names and ended up getting book one from the library. I hope the next books will show more of the mermaid’s life because fantasy books need showing, not simply telling. We’ve been introduced to few mermaids and got to know only one. So underdeveloped I could basically say that there isn’t any. The world-building is extremely underdeveloped. Challenges must be faced and Emily is just the right girl to spark a revolution. I prefer that to a heroine with a seemingly perfect life. She’s a great kid whose life is complicated. She’s energetic, curious, courageous and adventurous. Such as, where is her father? In life, how does a bohemian poet cope with middle age? What does settling down look like for them? After multiple books that avoid the “memoir” label, what will they elect to write about that finally fixes it on the front cover? In the movies, dissolute youth often ends in a fiery wreck at the bottom of a ravine. The book did make me wonder how its author ended up, in a metaphysical sense. My experience with Chelsea Girls was practically anthropological, so distant was the content from anything I’ve lived, and it stirred in me both jealousy and relief. It’s a book wrought from the chaos of New York City in the 1970s: sex, crime, booze and drugs, poverty, and poetry. When I read Eileen Myles’s most famous book, Chelsea Girls, I found myself regretting my mild little life. 6/11/2023 0 Comments All the pretty horses audio bookWe usually answer emails within a few days, often the same day, but not always. I know there’s been some controversy over this latest installment from Sylvia Day. He oozes sex appeal, demands attention, wields power, and insists on complete and total possession. Alarming and thought-provoking, Getting Off asks tough, but crucial, questions about pornography, sex, manhood, and the way toward genuine social justice. These days, anti-porn arguments are assumed to be "anti-sex" and thus a critical debate is silenced. Pornography also makes for complicated politics. Pornography is a thriving multi-billion-dollar industry it drives the direction of emerging media technology. In his trademark conversational style, he shows how mainstream pornography reinforces social definitions of manhood and influences men's attitudes about women and how to treat them. Getting Off seamlessly blends personal anecdotes from Jensen's years as a feminist anti-pornography activist with scholarly research. Jensen's treatise begins with a simple demand: "Be a man." It ends with a defiant response: "I chose to struggle to be a human being." The journey from masculinity to humanity is found in the candid and intelligent exploration of porn's devastating role in defining masculinity. So argues Robert Jensen in Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity. 6/10/2023 0 Comments Silver shark by ilona andrewsThere was nothing she could do through the bionet or out of it.
