Our audiovisual archive, Voca, currently holds the work of 45 Pulitzer Prize Winners, 40 National Book Award Winners, 28 Poet Laureates and 4 Nobel Laureates in Literature.

His wildly popular essay "How to Write About Africa," an incisive and unapologetic piece that exposed the harmfully racist ways Western media depicts Africa, with implicit bias and subjective clichs, changed the game for African writers and helped set the stage for a new generation of authors, from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie to Yaa Gyasi. Before his tragic death in 2019 at the age of forty-seven, he won the Caine Prize for African Writing and was named one of Time's 100 Most Influential People. Whichever angle you take, be sure to leave the strong impression that without your intervention and your important book, Africa is doomed."īinyavanga Wainaina was a pioneering voice in African literature, an award-winning memoirist and essayist, and a gatherer of literary communities. His life story, told in full for the first time here, takes us into shadowy corners of the nineteenth century, including mesmerism, psychopathy, spiritualism, yellow journalism, and capital punishment. Shawn Francis Peters unravels that sordid, spellbinding story in his account of the trial of Harry Hayward, a serial seducer and schemer whom some deemed a “Svengali,” others a “Machiavelli,” and others a “lunatic” and “man without a soul.”ĭubbed “one of the greatest criminals the world has ever seen” by the famed detective William Pinkerton, Harry Hayward was an inveterate and cunning plotter of crimes large and small, dabbling in arson, insurance fraud, counterfeiting, and illegal gambling. The murder of Kittie Ging, a twenty-nine-year-old dressmaker, was the final act in a melodrama of seduction and betrayal, petty crimes and monstrous deeds that would obsess reporters and their readers across the nation when the man who likely arranged her killing came to trial the following spring. On a winter night in 1894, a young woman’s body was found in the middle of a road near Lake Calhoun on the outskirts of Minneapolis. an avocado wrap, but not queer enough to get cruised at a gay bar. I ate as I drove home, wondering how it was that I was queer enough to pick out. And I did my best to ignore the mostly-transparent guy with the afro jacking off in the corner, and the voice coming from aisle three that kept repeating, “But he loves me. Halfway back to the counter I turned around and exchanged the beef for the avocado again. I reached for an avocado wrap, but then I remembered what the dead creep at the coffee house had said about queers and vegetarians, and opted for a roast beef instead. Its best read in order, so if youre new to the series, start with Ps圜op 1, Among the Livingand prepare for a hauntingly good read. I split off from Carolyn and Marks around 11:30 and swung by a 7-11 for something to eat. So the trip to the GloryWhole was a total bust. Any dead bar-hoppers were drowned out by the music, and no one even cruised me. Unfortunately, no live person at the bar knew Anthony Blakewood well enough to have any idea who he’d gone home with. “Even if I’d had a drink or two in me, the music was so loud that I probably wouldn’t be bothered by disembodied sob stories. |
